Week 3
Everyone demos,
then the tools.

Learn, Vibe, Build

Tonight

Demos first.

1Demos. Four minutes each. Timer on screen.
2A short tools talk from me.
3Small groups.
4Work time.
Before the demos

Why we demo.

This class is about building.

Building means sharing it and taking feedback.

Sharing is how you learn. You get witnessed.

Every week, everyone shares. No build? Share anyway.

Demos

Four minutes each.

Show the thing.
Say which tool you used.
Give us one surprise, or one place you got stuck.
Unfinished is fine.
Didn’t build? Share anyway. Your perspective counts.

What’s new this week

Sept 3: a whole fly brain, mapped. 166,700 neurons, 125 million synapses.

The internet ran it: Doom, Minecraft, Beat Saber, Bad Apple.

Real wiring, toy neurons, hand-picked inputs and outputs. Not a fly playing games.

The serious result: the wiring alone predicts behavior. No training.

The RL link: use the wiring as the shape of a learner, then let it learn.

How to hold it

It is moving fast. Stay balanced.

Every demo tonight is a sign of how fast this is moving.

Anxiety about the pace makes it harder to navigate.

Be aware of the rate of change. Do not clench around it.

Your relationship with technology matters more than ever.

A couple of things I built

Aaron fills this live

The landscape

Three things vary.

The model

Who made the brain

OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, xAI. Plus open-weight models like Qwen and gpt-oss that anyone can download.

The harness

What you sit in

A chat window, a code editor, an agent in your terminal, or a builder in a browser tab.

Where it runs

Whose machine

Someone else’s cloud, or your own laptop.

Almost every tool you have heard of is one choice on each of these three.

Start here

Three good ones.

OpenCode
A terminal agent, free, paired with GitHub Copilot. Use Copilot Free or the free Student plan, then /connect → GitHub Copilot.
Antigravity
Google’s agentic editor. Free, no card. Gemini 3.8 Flash, Claude Sonnet and Opus 4.6, and gpt-oss-120b. There is also an agy CLI.
Codex
OpenAI’s coding agent. Free on a personal ChatGPT account.Your CU ChatGPT does not include Codex.
Also good

Five more that cost nothing.

Zed
An editor-shaped alternative to OpenCode. Free, and it runs external agents.
Ollama
Local models on your own laptop, driven by OpenCode. Try qwen2.5-coder 7B. No account at all.
Cursor
The Hobby tier. An editor where you see the code while the AI writes it.
Browser builders
Bolt, Lovable, Base44. Describe an app in a tab and get a build. Small daily limits.
Amazon Kiro
Free 50 credits. Open-weight models plus Claude Sonnet 4.5.
Know before you go

Not free this term.

Claude Code
Needs a Claude Pro plan, $20/mo and up.
Cursor Pro
Paid. The free student year is not being offered now.
Grok Build
Paid.
Kimi Code
Paid.
Qwen Code
The free tier ended in April.

Nothing in this class requires you to pay for a tool.

Week 3 assignment

Use three different tools.

What
The same thing three times, or three different projects. Any AI tool counts: coding agents, app builders, chat assistants.
Evidence
Screenshots, a screen recording, or links. Cap (cap.so) is free and records your screen.
Writing
At least three paragraphs on the experience. What stuck out with each one, what you liked, what you didn’t, what you learned.
Due
Sunday, Sep 20, 11:59 PM.

Start early. Free tiers cap you per day, so three tools does not fit in one night.

This is a suggestion, not a requirement. Show your learning about the tools another way if you’d rather. Experimentation and diversity are the point.

Small groups · 10 minutes

Three questions.

Which tool did you use for Week 2, and why that one?
What did it get right on the first try, and where did it fight you?
What would you try next, and what is stopping you?

Work time.

Get set up with at least one new tool tonight.
